Chad Daybell served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended BYU before he married his first wife Tammy Daybell and the couple had five children together and the family moved to Salem, Utah in 2015 . He worked as a grave digger for almost 20 years and wrote a series of novels that he claimed were inspired, sometimes by premonitions or "revelations", other times by visions, he had of the future. He believed that he experienced a life after death experience while cliff jumping and that it opened a door for him to have special spiritual gifts.
Chad traveled and spoke about his books and spiritual gifts at various events and conferences. At an end of days survivalist conference in St. George, Utah, he met Lori Vallow. The two connected almost immediately and carried out an affair. Over the course of their relationship they began to develop a following and Chad began to hold himself out as a modern prophet meant to lead the 144,000 or elect and chosen children of God in the last days.
As their relationship progressed, Lori's husband would be shot by her brother, allegedly with Chad's encouragement and planning. Not long after her husband's death, she moved up to Idaho with her daughter from a previous marriage (she had several) and her step son (actually her deceased husband's sister's grandson) that she and her deceased husband had adopted and her brother, Alex, who had shot her then husband. Soon after, Chad's wife, Tammy, mysteriously died of natural causes (later determined to be from asphyxiation). Finally, Chad and Lori eloped to Hawaii to be married.
At the time, no one had heard from the two children and after they were reported missing and Chad and Lori were uncooperative, they were arrested in Hawaii and brought back to Idaho. The two children's remains were discovered in Chad's backyard. Chad and Lori were charged with three counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Chad has also been charged with insurance fraud.
Lori was found guilty on all charges but the death penalty was removed in her case as a sanction against the state for late disclosures of evidence. In her case, the trial was not streamed and I had to attend in person. If you would like in depth trial coverage of Lori Vallow's trial last year, you can check out my playlist.
Chad Daybell's trial will be very different as he intends to present a defense and the death penalty is still on the table,
