It’s a big deal to be invited to the family dinner table. What happens at the family dinner table shapes the identity of the family: who’s in, who’s out, whose opinions are valued, whose opinions are disregarded. And what happens when a new person is invited to the table says a lot about the identity of the family. On the night before he is arrested, Jesus invites his disciples to join him at the dinner table. Through Communion he extends the same invitation to each of us. Having just arrived in Jerusalem and hailed as a king riding on a donkey, this table is a King’s banquet. It is also a condemned man’s last meal. By creating a place at the table for each of us, Jesus is showing us how through his death and resurrection he is inviting us all to become a part of God’s family.
