Jeffrey Dahmer REACTING to LIFE Sentence

They smelled the foul odors. They heard the power saw buzzing in the dead of night but neighbors never imagined the horrors happening right next door. The hot sultry night of July 22, 1991 was one the tenants of the Oxford Apartments would never forget. A panic stcricken young man--a pair of handcuffs still dangling from his wrists--ran out of Apartment 213 and told police an incredible tale of terror. Shaking with fear, he led officers back to his captor's lair, where they made the gruesome discovery. Inside were the body parts of at least fifteen men--including torsos stuffed into a barrel, severed heads in a refrigerator, and skulls boiled clean and stashed in a filing cabinet. Tacked to the freezer were Poloroid photographs of mutilated corpses.

The Trial
On February 17th, 1992, Jeffrey Dahmer's fatal orgy was officially over. He was found guilty just two days before. Throughout the trial, the families of the 15 men and boys Dahmer slayed and mutilated held their peace. They finally had their day in court before the sentencing.
Why Didn’t Dahmer Get The Penalty?
There’s one simple reason why the slayer wasn’t given the penalty – Wisconsin is one of only 12 states which does not have the penalty. Dahmer committed all but one of his crimes in Milwaukee, which is in the state of Wisconsin, so that’s where his trial took place. The penalty was officially abolished in Wisconsin on July 10 1853 and hasn’t existed in the state ever since.

Total Life Sentences
Dahmer was arrested on July 22 1991 and was sentenced to 16 life sentences in total, which equated to 957 years. Initially, he was charged with four counts of first-degree slaying, then he was charged with 11 more by the following month, bringing his total to 15.
On February 17, 1992, he was given 15 life sentences and transferred to the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage. Three months after his conviction, Dahmer was extradited to Ohio to my tried for his first victim Steven Hicks and was given a 16th life sentence.

What’s New
Jeffrey Dahmer has gone down in history as one of the scariest and most notorious serial criminals of all time. Between 1978 and 1991, the cannibal gruesomely slayed 17 innocent victims by dismembering them and eating their remains. While we've seen his story unfold in countless documentaries and true crime movies like the Ross Lynch-led My Friend Dahmer, there's a brand-new limited series on the horizon which taps into his disturbing habits and terrifying psyche.

Insensitivity Toward the Victims' Families
The families of Dahmer's 17 known victims have endured unspeakable trauma in the fallout of his crimes. It's important to remember that any documentary, podcast, book, series/movie will come at the expense of reliving that trauma for some, and in this case, it's come at the expense of many. Rita Isbell, sister of Erol Lindsey (whom Dahmer slayed in 1991) gave a highly emotional victim impact statement during his trial, which was likely cathartic, but also incredibly draining. Speaking to media, Isbell said of that moment: "Whatever I thought I was going to say, that didn't happen. It all just came out in the moment. I recognized evil. I was face-to-face with pure evil."
