C/W - brief discussion of domestic violence and suicide ideation

Today I spoke with Becca, who grew up in the Assemblies of God church and placed her faith in Jesus as her savior as a young child, but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart.

We touched on many topics, including:

• Facing a traumatic home life due to her dad being an elder in the church while her mom dealt with depression, schizophrenia, and suicidal ideation.
• Being told at church that the Bible is the answer to everything, so higher education was not emphasized.
• Having elders blame her mom's mental health issues on demons and try in vain to perform exorcisms on her.
• Facing intensely dramatic and chaotic worship services at church, including dancing, speaking in tongues, and crying.
• Constantly confessing her sins in order to not backslide and lose her salvation.
• Not being allowed to focus on her own thoughts and feelings but being urged to instead always focus on god and on what would make him happy.
• Facing Rapture anxiety as she expected the Lord's return at any moment.
• Doing street evangelism with her father.
• Thinking early on that the unbelievers around her did not deserve hell.
• Being groomed, as a woman, to be ultra submissive, to not be assertive or pursue any leadership roles, and to not trust herself.
• Struggling with the conundrum of bringing children into the world with the knowledge that there was a chance they could go to hell.
• Concluding that the evidence in the New Testament portraying Jesus as fulfilling Old Testament prophecies was weak and uncompelling.
• Realizing that the Gospel accounts are fictional stories crafted from earlier mythological stories.
• Losing her first marriage due to worldview differences.
• Raising the next generation with an emphasis on their autonomy, education, and science.
• The importance of telling ourselves that we don't have to believe what doesn't have any evidence and doesn't make sense to us.

Many thanks to Becca for sharing her story and insights!
