Are you getting itchy skin or red eyes every time you use your hot tub? You might be adding too many chemicals. And that's actually making your water chemistry worse, not better.

The real problem might not be chlorine or bromine. But instead, it's your pH and alkalinity being out of whack. When these levels are off, it doesn't matter how much chlorine or bromine you add. Your skin will still get irritated.

Here's the fix: Test your water once a week and start by balancing your alkalinity first. It should be between 80 and 120 parts per million. Then, adjust your pH to between 7.2 and 7.8. Only after these are balanced should you worry about your sanitizer.

And remember, you only need a few teaspoons of chlorine or bromine per week to keep your water clean. Adding more won't make your water better - it'll just make your skin angrier.

Swim University makes pool and hot tub care easy for millions of homeowners. Each year, we continue to help more people with water chemistry, cleaning, and troubleshooting. We know taking care of a swimming pool or spa can be difficult. And it’s hard to find a trusted source of information. This is the reason we created Swim University.
